1983 - 1986: Columbia Computing Services Ltd., Vancouver, BC, Canada

Until recently, Columbia was North America's leading developer and marketer of computer software for educational administration. In 1983, Columbia began the development of a microcomputer DOS version of its popular mainframe product, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. This software does student scheduling, grade reporting, attendance, historical record keeping, and other administrative functions. The resulting software product line is currently installed in over 10,000 user sites worldwide.

Product Manager, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

  • Managed the technical writing group, which produced all manuals.
  • Managed the marketing group, which produced all marketing materials.
  • Coordinated twice yearly releases of the system.
  • Managed the shipping group, which distributed each new release of the system and all newly purchased systems.
  • Worked with the development group to plan system enhancements and future products.
  • Prepared and presented proposals for large sales (states or large school districts).
  • Researched competitive products.

Manager, Customer Support and Documentation

  • Managed customer support staff in two offices (Vancouver and Seattle) who did telephone support for all products.
  • Worked with another technical writer to produce the manuals.

Systems Analyst

  • Participated in the software design, set design and technical documentation standards and wrote the manuals.

  • Prepared program specifications and wrote programs for a Computer Assisted Waybilling system written in PL/1 and running on DEC mini-computer hardware.

  • Team leader responsible for Payroll and Production Statistics system written in COBAL and running on HP mini-computer hardware. The system was used by ten Containerboard and Packaging plants across Canada.
