Developed and hold original copyright to the Tabby Scheduling Optimizer, a student scheduling program used with SASIxp, the industry leading school administration software product line from Pearson Education Technologies.

1982 - 2000: Owner, S. Cohen and Associates, Santa Fe, NM

This consulting practice provides management, analysis, design and development services. Clients have included Pearson Education Technologies, National Computer Systems, Chancery Software, CTB Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, IBM, and Los Angeles Unified School District. Developed and held original copyright to the student scheduling component of Columbia Computing Services' popular PC-based software product, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM (TSS). This interval included two periods during which I accepted full time senior management positions with client companies, both of which successfully completed initial public offerings during my tenure.

1993 - 1994: Vice President, Product Development, Interlinq Software Corp., Kirkland, WA

Interlinq is the country's leading vendor of PC-based mortgage origination software; its MortgageWare product line is installed in thousands of sites nationwide.

Managed a department of over 50 professionals including product analysts, programmers, quality assurance testers, and technical writers. Significant completed projects included:

  • first commercial release of a product for Secondary Marketing,
  • operational pilot of a two-way electronic link between MortgageWare and Freddie Mac's Automated Underwriting System,
  • first commercial release of MortgageBase, a product to convert MortgageWare data to Xbase format.

1985 - 1987: Vice President, Software Development, Columbia Computing Services Ltd., Vancouver, BC, Canada

Columbia, now part of NCS Pearson, was North America's leading developer and marketer of computer software for educational administration for much of the 1980s and 90s.

  • Responsible for all aspects of planning, developing, and maintaining software distributed by the Company.
  • Managed a group of up to 20 professionals including systems analysts, programmers, consultants, and technical writers.
  • As a member of senior management, participated in overall strategic and financial planning.
  • Participated directly in sales to large buyers such as states and major cities.

1980 - 1982: Systems Consultant, MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., Vancouver, BC, Canada

Provided consulting support in areas of project management, systems design, system architecture, systems analysis, and methodology to Systems Development supervisors, project leaders, and user representatives. Managed a team of up to seven programmer/analysts responsible for the development and support of systems to automate the business functions of the Company's 17 logging divisions.

1969 - 1979: Manager, Programming Department, Columbia Computing Services Ltd., Vancouver, BC, Canada

Directed all activities related to development and maintenance of software systems, including support of operating system and other vendor-supplied software. Managed development of the mainframe version of the Company's proprietary software package, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. Other major projects included development of systems used in construction company accounting, pension plan administration, and data center management.
